Most promotions pages read like the prize table at a village fête. Everything is laid out in one long row, and it's left to you to work out which bits are meant for you. National's offers make far more sense once you notice that they follow a player's life at the casino. A few are built for your very first night. Others are there to give an ordinary week a lift. And some only really come into their own after you've been around for a few months.

So that's the order I've put them in. If you're new, start at the top. If you've been playing at National for a while, jump ahead to whichever part fits. Wherever you land, I'll tell you what each offer asks of you in return, because that, far more than the headline number, decides what it's really worth.

Your First Deposits at National

Your first deposit comes with a decision, and it's a pleasant one to have. National runs two welcome offers, and both are tied to the very first deposit you make, so you'll be choosing one of them rather than stacking the pair. Which one suits you comes down almost entirely to how you plan to pay.

Offer What you get Minimum deposit
OfferFirst Deposit Bonus What you get100% up to NZ$500 + 100 free spins + an instant bonus round Minimum depositNZ$50 for the match; NZ$100 for the spins and bonus round
OfferCrypto First Deposit Bonus What you get200% up to NZ$2,500 Minimum depositNZ$100 with a crypto payment method
OfferSecond Deposit Bonus What you get50% up to NZ$1,000 + 50 free spins Minimum depositAs stated in the offer terms

The standard package is the busier of the two. Put in NZ$50 and the match kicks in, but NZ$100 is the figure to aim for, since that amount also brings the spins and the bonus round into play. Your 100 spins are credited in two halves, one batch as soon as the deposit clears and the other 24 hours later. The bonus round, meanwhile, drops you straight into Big Bass Bonanza 1000. If Pragmatic Play's games aren't available where you live, you'll be given a bonus round in a BGaming slot instead, so nobody misses out.

The crypto offer keeps things simple and makes up for it in size. Deposit NZ$500 in crypto and you'll see NZ$1,500 in your balance, all at once, with nothing left to arrive later.

After that, a second deposit earns you 50% up to NZ$1,000 plus 50 free spins, added immediately. I think of it as the stepping stone between the welcome and the weekly offers, and it's a nice way to keep a good start rolling.

Claiming either welcome offer only takes a few minutes:

  1. Create your account, confirming along the way that you're old enough to gamble.
  2. Open the offer you'd like on the Promotions page and press Get bonus.
  3. Make your deposit in the cashier, picking a crypto method if you're after the 200% match.
  4. Look in the Bonuses tab of your account, where the bonus and any spins will be waiting.

What Wagering Means in Practice

This is the section most people skip, and it's the one I'd least like you to.

Every casino bonus carries a wagering requirement. It is the amount you must bet before bonus funds, or winnings from free spins, can be withdrawn. At National, the requirement is x40, both for the crypto bonus and for anything won with the welcome free spins. While the crypto bonus is active, no single bet may exceed NZ$25.

On its own, "x40" doesn't mean a great deal, so let's put some money behind it. Say you deposit NZ$500 in crypto and pick up the NZ$1,000 bonus. Multiply that bonus by 40 and you get NZ$40,000, which is how much you'll need to bet in total before it turns into cash you can withdraw. At the NZ$25 limit, that's 1,600 spins. At NZ$5 a spin, it's 8,000.

I know that looks like a mountain. It's smaller than it seems, though, for two reasons. Whatever you win along the way goes back into your bets and counts towards the total, so you aren't paying for NZ$40,000 of play out of your own pocket. And free spins work on a much gentler scale. If your 100 welcome spins bring in NZ$100, you'll need to bet NZ$4,000 before those winnings are yours to take out.

The best advice I can give is also the least technical. Choose a slot you actually enjoy, at a stake that lets you settle in for a while. Bonus funds are made for slots in any case, since they can't be used at the live dealer tables.

A Regular Week at National

Once the welcome offers are behind you, the rhythm of the week takes over.

Friday is the big day. The Friday Reload gives you 50% up to NZ$1,250 plus 100 free spins on Book of Cats, with half the spins landing on Friday itself and the other half on Saturday. I've seen plenty of players shift their weekly deposit to Friday once they spot this, and I can't fault the logic. It's the same money, and it simply goes further.

If you top up more than once a week, the Unlimited Bonus is aimed squarely at you. Any deposit of NZ$150 or more earns a bonus with free spins, whatever day it happens to be. On top of that, each deposit earns a Fortune Wheel spin, and its prizes range from a handful of spins or points all the way to NZ$50,000. I've never landed that one myself, but the wheel does make a routine top-up feel a little more like an occasion.

The Secret Bonus is the odd one out, and quietly my favourite. It runs on one set day of the week, and you don't find out what you've won until after your qualifying deposit has gone in. Some players find that maddening. For me, it's the one offer on the calendar that still manages to surprise.

Bigger deposits get an offer of their own, too. The Highroller Bonus matches 100% up to NZ$3,750 on a deposit of NZ$1,500 or more. It sits apart from the welcome package, so players with larger bankrolls aren't stuck with an offer sized for everyone else.

Rewards for Loyal Players

National's VIP programme runs underneath everything above, whether you're paying attention to it or not. Your first deposit enrols you automatically, each Comp Point stands for NZ$100 of slot betting, and every one of the fifteen levels comes with a reward, starting at 25 free spins and topping out at NZ$500,000.

From a promotions point of view, the real highlight is the Sunday Boost. VIP players receive up to 50 Mega Spins, and every one of them is worth NZ$5. That might not sound dramatic until you remember that normal free spins are usually set at a few cents each. A NZ$5 spin has many times their potential, and fifty of those turning up on a Sunday is about as good as a recurring offer gets.

The terms for VIP rewards are fixed. Level rewards are credited within 24 hours, are subject to 10x wagering and may be used on slots only. Cash obtained by exchanging Comp Points is subject to 5x wagering.

What catches people out is the timing rather than the terms. No-deposit VIP spins have to be activated within 3 days, and once they're active, you have 7 days to complete the wagering. My own habit is to check my account the morning after I've moved up a level, and it has saved me from more than one expired reward. The VIP page goes into every level, the points behind each one and how the exchange rate improves on the way up.

Treasure Races and Leaderboards

I'll confess I was sceptical about casino tournaments for years. It took me a while to see the appeal of the Treasure Races, and in the end it turned out to be very simple: they put a scoreboard on top of play you were doing anyway.

Tournament Prize pool
TournamentSonic Treasure Race Prize poolNZ$500 + 300 free spins
TournamentFlash Treasure Race Prize poolNZ$375 + 300 free spins
TournamentRapid Treasure Race Prize poolNZ$250 + 300 free spins

Each race counts down on its own clock. While it's running, your bets on qualifying games push you up the leaderboard, and when time runs out, the players at the top share the cash and spins between them. You don't pay to enter, and you don't need to place any extra bets. Other tournaments come and go in the promotions section alongside these three, so it's worth a peek whenever you log in.

Free Extras That Add Up

Some of the best value at National costs you nothing, and all of it sits happily alongside the deposit offers.

Two of these gifts ask only for a couple of minutes of your time. Install National's app on your phone and you'll receive 10 free spins without depositing, and subscribing to the casino's updates earns another 10. Each can be claimed once.

The network promotions don't even ask for that much. Prize Drops divide NZ$500,000 among winning players, and two studio campaigns, BGaming Drops and Pragmatic Play's Drops & Wins, scatter random cash prizes through normal spins on eligible games. There's nothing to opt into. If the game you're playing carries a Drops & Wins badge, you're already in with a chance.

Promo Codes and Seasonal Offers

You won't find National's promo codes scattered across the internet, and that's by design. The casino hands them out only through its trusted partners, which also means a code from one of those partners is the real thing. New players type the code in during registration, while existing players add it in the coupon field when they deposit. Codes are nearly always tied to offers that don't last long, so I'd use one soon after it reaches you.

Seasonal offers follow a similar spirit. Around holidays and special events, extra promotions join the regular calendar, and network campaigns such as Prize Drops run for set periods rather than indefinitely. The standing offers will be there whenever you look. The seasonal ones are the reason to open the Promotions tab now and then, even when you aren't planning to deposit.

Bonus Questions

Why hasn't my deposit bonus appeared?

Usually it's one of a handful of things. The deposit may have been below the minimum, or the offer may already have been claimed, either on your account or on a linked one that shares details such as an IP address or payment method. A bonus also won't appear if promotions are switched off in your account settings, or if players in your country can't take part in casino promotions. If none of that fits, live chat can look into your account for you.

Can I claim both the standard and the crypto welcome bonus?

I'm afraid not. Both offers belong to your first deposit ever, so it's one or the other. If you're paying in crypto, the 200% match gives you more. If you're paying by card or e-wallet, the standard package, with its spins and bonus round, is the better fit.

Can I use bonus money at live dealer tables?

No. Bonus money is meant for slots, and the live casino runs on real money only. You're still free to play the live tables with your own balance, of course; those bets just won't help you with bonus wagering.

What's the difference between sticky and non-sticky bonuses?

With a sticky bonus, you can play with the bonus money but never withdraw it, so only what you win from it can be cashed out. A non-sticky bonus can be withdrawn together with its winnings once the wagering is complete. Each promotion's terms tell you which kind you're dealing with.

Do bets made with bonus money earn Comp Points?

No. Your VIP progress only moves with slot bets placed from your own balance, so a session played entirely on bonus funds won't bring you any closer to the next level.

Players on the Promotions

A few players on the offers they use most.

"Friday is my deposit day now."

5/5

For ages I just topped up whenever I fancied a game, usually on a Tuesday for no reason at all. Then someone pointed out the Friday Reload, and I thought, well, why not wait three days? It's the same money with 100 extra spins on Book of Cats. The second lot turns up on Saturday morning, and it's become a nice little weekend thing for me. — Carla

"I joined a Treasure Race without meaning to."

5/5

I was playing my usual slots one evening when I noticed my name on a leaderboard. I hadn't entered anything! I came nowhere that time, obviously. The next race I actually paid attention and ended up with a share of the spins. Nothing about how I play has changed, there's just a scoreboard now, and I check it far more often than I should. — Dev

"The Sunday spins are the real prize."

5/5

It took me a good while to reach VIP, and I wasn't convinced it would be worth the effort. Then my first Sunday Boost came through. Fifty spins at NZ$5 each feels completely different from the usual ten-cent ones, and one of them paid more than I'd won all week. My one tip is to activate them quickly, because the clock really does run. — Mireille

Making the Most of the Calendar

If there's one thing I'd like you to take from this page, it's that National's calendar doesn't need a strategy to be worth using. Pick the welcome offer that matches the way you pay. If a weekly deposit suits you, make it on a Friday. Then let the free spins, the network drops and your VIP progress build up quietly in the background. Read the terms of each deposit offer before you say yes to it, and most of the rest will take care of itself.

Responsible Play

A bonus can make an evening last longer, but it can't tip the odds of a single game in your favour, and it's no way to win back what you've lost. The most useful thing you can do with any promotion is to settle on your budget before you claim it, then stop when you reach that number, whatever the bonus balance happens to say.

If you'd like some help staying on track, National's support team can cap how much you deposit, lose or wager, and how long your sessions run, and self-exclusion can be set up through live chat at any hour of the day. Those deposit limits don't extend to crypto, so crypto players will want to keep their own tally. Should gambling ever stop feeling like entertainment, free and confidential support is available from Gambling Therapy, GamCare and Gamblers Anonymous. Promotions at National are open only to players who are 20 or older.
