My phone gets a fair few casino questions, mostly from friends who know what I do for a living. What surprised me, years ago, was how small they usually are. Nobody has ever messaged me at midnight to ask about licensing. They message me because their free spins still haven't turned up, or because they've deposited NZ$75 and can't work out where the bonus went.

So I've written this page the way I'd answer those messages. The questions are grouped by topic, and I've kept the answers short where short does the job. Now and then a question deserves a bit more, and in those spots I've added a note of my own.

Getting Started and Staying Safe

When someone new asks me about a casino, the first question is nearly always some version of "is it legit?" Fair enough. I'd ask the same.

Can I trust National Casino with my money and details?

I think so, and here's why. It's licensed in Curaçao, like most international online casinos, and the outcome of every game is decided by a certified random number generator that nobody at the casino can lean on. Anything you send, whether it's a payment or your address, is wrapped in 128-bit SSL encryption. Even the ID check before you cash out for the first time belongs to that same safety net. It can feel like a chore, but it's also what stops a stranger from cashing out your balance.

Is my card information safe?

Yes. Your card details are encrypted on the way in, and there's anti-fraud monitoring on accounts that looks for anything odd. I've never had a moment's worry about it.

Can I play without creating an account?

Mostly, yes. The slots open in demo mode without any sign-up, so you can spin with play money until you know whether you actually like a game. I do this with almost every new release. The one place demo doesn't reach is the live casino, because a real dealer is running every round and it all happens for real money.

Which currencies can I use?

Euros, a selection of other currencies, and crypto too. You'll choose when you register, so it's worth a second's thought, especially if you're planning to take the crypto welcome offer.

Games and How They Work

Once people have poked around the lobby for ten minutes, the questions change. They stop asking whether the place is safe and start asking what on earth a Megaways is.

How is a Megaways slot different from a Hold & Win slot?

It's a bit like comparing a car's engine with its sunroof. Megaways is about how the reels behave: every spin, each reel can show a different number of symbols, so there's never a fixed number of ways to win. Hold & Win is a feature you trigger. Land enough coins and they freeze where they are, a short run of respins begins, and every new coin you catch gives you your respins back.

What does the RTP number on some game tiles mean?

Think of it as a quick look at the game's recent payouts. Nothing more mysterious than that. It won't tell you anything about your next spin, though, and it's a different thing from the RTP the game was built with.

Where do I find a slot's RTP and volatility?

Inside the game, look for the little "i", or sometimes a menu icon. I'd bet most players have never pressed it, which is a shame. It has the rules and the paytable, and most games list their RTP and biggest possible win in there. Plenty also give a volatility rating, which I find even more useful than the RTP.

A note from me: people mix up the two RTP figures all the time, and I don't blame them. The one inside the info panel is part of how the game was designed. It describes what the game returns across a huge number of spins, and for most slots it lands somewhere between 94% and 97%. The number on the tile is more like gossip about the last little while. It's fun, and I glance at it too, but it's the info panel figure I trust when I'm choosing what to play.
How low can I bet at the live tables?

That depends on which table you sit at. A lot of them welcome small stakes, a few are clearly aimed at bigger players, and every table shows its limits as soon as you open it.

Will live dealer games work on mobile data?

They will if the signal's decent. Live games are basically a video stream with a betting screen on top, so a patchy connection shows up fast. If you've got Wi-Fi nearby, use it.

Bonuses and Wagering

If you added up every message in every casino's support queue, I suspect half of them would be about bonuses. Here are the ones I'm asked most often.

Is a promo code needed to get the welcome offer?

No, you can relax on that one. The standard welcome bonus lands by itself once you've made a first deposit that meets the minimum. Codes do exist, but they belong to limited offers handed out by National's partners.

Is it possible to take both welcome offers?

Sadly not. Each of them belongs to your first-ever deposit, which leaves room for just one. My rule of thumb: if you're going to pay with crypto anyway, take the 200% match up to NZ$2,500. For card or e-wallet players, the standard package makes more sense, because the match comes bundled with free spins and a bonus round.

My deposit went in, but where's the bonus?

Nine times out of ten, it's one of a few things. The deposit might have been under the minimum, which is the NZ$75 mistake I mentioned at the top. The welcome offer might already have been used, whether on your own account or one connected to it. Promotions might be switched off in your settings without you realising, or they might not be available where you live. If none of that sounds right, message live chat and they'll look at your account directly.

What does "wagering" actually mean?

It's the amount you need to bet before a bonus, or the winnings from free spins, turns into money you can withdraw. At National, the crypto welcome bonus has x40 wagering, as does anything you win with the welcome spins.

A note from me: "x40" means nothing until you put a number on it, so let's do that. A NZ$1,000 crypto bonus at x40 means NZ$40,000 in total bets. I know how that sounds. But every win you play again counts towards that total, so you're nowhere near spending NZ$40,000 of your own money. The Promotions page has the full example, and I'd give it five minutes before accepting any deposit bonus.
Does bonus money work on live casino games?

No. Bonus balances are for slots. The live tables only take real money, which is also why they don't have a demo mode.

What do "sticky" and "non-sticky" mean for a bonus?

Picture a sticky bonus as a voucher you can spend at the casino but can never take home. You keep whatever it wins, but the voucher itself stays behind. A non-sticky bonus is more generous in that sense: once its wagering is done, the bonus and its winnings can both leave with you. The terms of each offer tell you which you've got.

If I have an active bonus, can I still cash out?

Your real money, yes. The bonus side of your balance, along with anything it's won, waits until the wagering has been met. Your account's Bonuses tab shows how far along you are.

Deposits, Withdrawals and Verification

Money questions tend to come with a bit of urgency attached, usually because someone has just won something. So I'll get straight to the point with these.

Which withdrawal method gets my money to me fastest?

Crypto, usually, and e-wallets aren't far behind. Card withdrawals are the slow ones and can take a few days, simply because the money has to travel through the banks.

Which document is needed for verification?

Your passport or your national ID card. That's it.

How long does verification take?

Usually no more than 72 hours after National receives your document. When there's a big queue of documents it can stretch a little. If a few days go by and you haven't heard anything, give support a nudge through live chat or by email.

Is it possible to withdraw without being verified?

No. Your first withdrawal simply waits until the check is complete.

A note from me: this is the one piece of advice I repeat to everyone, so forgive me for repeating it here too. Upload your document the same day you register. The check then runs quietly while you're still exploring the games, and when that first decent win arrives, you can go straight to the cashier. Leave it until later and those three days of checks land on exactly the moment you least want to wait.
What should I do if my deposit fails?

Before anything else, check what you typed. A card number with two digits swapped, or a wrong security code, causes more failed deposits than everything else put together. If the details are definitely right, try a different payment method, since some banks block gambling payments on certain cards. Still stuck? Support has a view of your payment that you don't, so let them take a look.

Where are the payment limits shown?

In the cashier, once you're logged in. Each payment method has its own limits, so check the one you're actually planning to use.

Can I deposit and withdraw from my phone?

Yes, and it works just the same as on a computer, whether you're using the app or a mobile browser.

The VIP Programme

I like VIP questions, because National publishes all its numbers and I can give exact answers instead of "it depends".

Is there anything to sign up for?

Nothing at all. Your first deposit makes you a member, and your next slot bet starts earning points.

Which bets earn Comp Points?

Slot bets made with your own money, at one point for each NZ$100. Live casino and table games don't earn any, and neither do bets made with bonus funds. It surprises people, so it's worth knowing before you plan a big night at the blackjack tables.

What does the first level take?

Twenty-five Comp Points, which works out at NZ$2,500 bet on slots. You get 25 free spins for it, and anyone who plays regularly tends to get there fast.

How long do I wait for a level reward?

No more than a day. The important part comes after that: any no-deposit spins need activating within 3 days, and then you have 7 days to finish their wagering.

What are Comp Points good for, apart from levels?

You can swap them for cash or bonuses. At Level 1, NZ$5 costs you 110 points, and the price keeps falling as you climb until it settles at 60 points from Level 9 onwards. Cash from a swap carries 5x wagering before you can withdraw it.

When does the points cycle begin and end?

Your first cycle starts with your first deposit. Every two months your points drop back to zero and a fresh cycle begins.

A note from me: that reset is the thing players forget most. Keep half an eye on the cycle timer, and check it about seven days before it hits zero, while your points can still be exchanged. The VIP page has all fifteen levels laid out, plus a worked example with proper figures.

The Mobile App

App questions almost always come from someone standing in their kitchen, holding their phone at arm's length and frowning at it. So I'll keep these brief.

Is the app a proper app or just a shortcut?

It's a proper app, just not a store one. You install it from National's website, on Android or iOS, and once it's sitting on your home screen, it behaves like anything else you've installed.

Do I need to update it?

Never. It's always the same version as the website. If it ever looks a bit off, close it and open it again, and that usually does the trick.

Where are my 10 spins for installing the app?

They can take up to an hour to appear after your first login from the app, so wait that long and then check Bonuses. It's a one-time gift, and reinstalling won't trigger it again. If an hour has passed and they're still missing, live chat can check what's going on.

Still Looking for an Answer?

I'd be amazed if this page covered every question anyone's ever had, so don't worry if yours isn't here. National's support team is on live chat around the clock, and you can email them too. The big advantage they have over me is that they can see your actual account, which often turns a long explanation into a thirty-second fix.

And if you'd like more depth on any of these topics, each has its own page: Casino Games, Promotions, Payment, VIP and the App page all go much further than a list of questions can.

One More Question Worth Asking

There's a question I've never seen in any casino's FAQ, and I think it belongs in all of them: is this still fun?

Ask yourself that now and again, and answer honestly. If it's a yes, enjoy yourself. If you hesitate, that hesitation is worth listening to.

National will help if you ever want it to. Support can cap what you deposit, lose or wager, or how long you play, and live chat can set up self-exclusion whenever you ask, day or night. Crypto deposits aren't covered by those deposit limits, so crypto players need to keep their own tally. For free and confidential help, you can reach out to Gamblers Anonymous, GamCare or Gambling Therapy. National is for over-20s only.
